Finally, the beach

by Angela on May 21, 2012 · 0 comments

Things are looking up here in Miami after almost a week of settling pains and overcast skies. Yesterday, the sun played peek-a-boo, so Lisa Swift, Max and I headed to the beach to actually put our feet in the wet sand. It was muggy and glorious.

Here’s Max on South Pointe Beach, soaking up the Florida heat.

The opposite of sardines

by Mike on May 21, 2012 · 0 comments

My dressing room in Miami

When I asked my esteemed colleague Tony Freeman (standby for Timon, Zazu, Pumbaa and Scar) what the title of this post should be, he answered, ”What’s the opposite of sardines?” I guess that about sums it up.

Every city where The Lion King lands, the dressing room situation varies. It all depends, of course, on each theater’s facilities. Some are smaller and more cramped with fewer total dressing rooms, like our dressing room in Orlando. There at the Bob Carr Theater, Tony and I, along with Robbie Swift (Ed the Hyena) and Keith Bennett (Banzai the Hyena) shared our dressing room with the ENTIRE male ensemble! I thought it was great. It was always very lively and social whether you wanted it that way or not. I liked being able to catch up with everyone and stay “in the loop”, because usually I’m the one so far behind on the latest gossip. It was also funny to watch Robbie wrestle with his huge futon-like hyena costume in cramped quarters.

Our situation in Miami is decidedly different. Here at the Ziff Opera House in the Adrienne Arscht Center, I feel like I’m on the set of an absurdist play. We have so much space it’s ridiculous! Tony and I share a dressing room that is meant for easily 25 actors. We have 5 toilets, 4 sinks and 3 showers all to ourselves. Sometimes it can be a little too quiet, almost unsettling. “You could swing a dead cat over your head and not hit anything.” says Tony. I’m not sure what he means by that, but I’m not sure what he means a lot of the time.

We are located right across the hall from the young Nala actresses’ dressing room, where the water cooler lives.  Often, I have to head there to fill up my water bottle — and Sade and Kailah have set up a makeshift “cafe” where they charge me for the water.

Tony has been with The Lion King for 12 years and has seen it all. He has a wicked sense of humor, and keeps me in stitches. We’re both the principle standbys, and so we are often sitting side by side throughout the show unless one of us gets called on to perform. So… we spend a lot of time together in this huge dressing room, Tony and I. That is, except when he goes to play ping pong with the guys in the Puppet Department. Here he is on a team with Michael Reilly (master puppeteer) vs. Nick Cordelione (Timon, if you couldn’t tell) and Rob Parks (ensemble).

Tony originally played Zazu on Broadway and on tour for 11 years, has notched over 3,000 performances and is now the standby for Zazu, Timon, Scar, and Pumbaa. I can’t express how helpful he has been to me, as I make my way here on the road. He is a true gentleman, and a terrific talent. He also is a HUGE fantasy sports fan, maybe even more so than myself. If I had to pick one guy to spend in this enormous dressing room, it would be Mr. Freeman. We are truly a match made in Lion King heaven.

The Insta-home Challenge: Miami

May 18, 2012

Part One We wanted to put to rest any notion that we live this charmed, oh-so-easy life on the road. Yes, we do get to experience a brand new city in all its glory every month. But the cleaning out, packing up, mapping through, moving in, unpacking and cleaning is proving harder with each city [...]

Detour: Angela bounces to Brooklyn

May 12, 2012

Mama got to redeem some getaway credits! I took a break from Lion King tour life and spent almost five days away from my two guys. My best friend from college, Anita, got married in a courthouse in Brooklyn, and I flew up to bear witness. It was so fun to see all the New [...]

The strange scene at home

May 11, 2012

When you live with Lion King theater actors, you never know what you will see when you come home. (In the previous Hollick case, titled “The Great Max Birth of 2010″, Mike was the one that showed up all crazy — at the hospital.) We’re sharing our Orlando house with Nick Cordelione (he plays Timon) [...]

Take me out to the basketball game

May 6, 2012

This will be a short post, as I am WAY behind on writing about the past 3 weeks of life here on our Orlando leg of the Lion King tour. But today was exciting, as I reconnected with my friend Patrick Ewing. I know him from my days as a broadcaster with the NBA. Below, [...]

Let them eat pie!

May 4, 2012

So we thought we’d be getting away from the food-oriented posts, since leaving everything-is-fried New Orleans. We are halfway through our stay in Orlando and loving it — it’s sunny every day, totally family-friendly with all the theme parks, and man! We are eating so much healthier. Hit the brakes! I confess: last weekend, the [...]

The Great Orlando Escapade

April 30, 2012

Wow.  We are rounding out 2 weeks in Orlando and no posts. Why the silence? What happened to the Hollicks? Let me explain.  We have been busy. Busy having fun! You see, we are sharing a nice big house in Davenport, Florida, outside of Orlando with Nick Cordelione (Timon), his ten-year-old daughter Hero, and Rashada [...]

New Orleans’ Greatest Hits

April 20, 2012

The Hollicks’ Top Ten in New Orleans, LA What is it they say — veni, vedi, veci? We came, we saw, we conquered New Orleans. No, wait, I stand corrected: New Orleans conquered us. Mike and I have been joking that there’s a secret voodoo additive in the Creole and Cajun food here that makes [...]

The way to a cast’s heart is through their stomach

April 14, 2012

You all know by now just how bowled over we are with the food in the restaurants here in the Big Easy. But when Creole and Cajun cuisine is made for you personally, from scratch, with love, it’s truly overwhelming. A few weekends ago, the entire Lion King cast and crew got a special surprise [...]
